The Eutychian dispute

Doctrinal · 449–451 · ecumenical

Eutyches, pressed at a synod in his own city in 448, would not say that Christ is of one substance with us. A second council at Ephesus cleared him by force in 449; Chalcedon set the clearing aside two years later.

How it ended. Condemned at Chalcedon in 451, and the Definition framed there is written against him as much as against Nestorius.

How it ran

  1. 449 — Second Council of Ephesus (where it hardened). Clears Eutyches by force; Leo calls it a den of robbers.
  2. 451 — Council of Chalcedon (where it was settled). Condemns him and defines against the confusion of the natures.
