Khan Boris of Bulgaria was baptized in 864, his imperial godfather giving him the name Michael. He bargained hard between Rome and Constantinople for an autonomous church — the contest that helped ignite the Photian schism — and settled his people in the Byzantine communion: the root of the Ohrid line.
Bulgaria enters Christendom — and its church, contested between Rome and Constantinople, goes to the East.
