No scripture records the end of Mary's life. What the churches keep instead is the Dormition: that she fell asleep surrounded by the apostles, was laid in the tomb at Gethsemane, and that the tomb was afterwards found empty. John of Damascus preached this at that tomb in the eighth century, setting the Jerusalem tradition against the rival claim for Ephesus. The East calls it the Falling-Asleep and the West the Assumption; the day is 15 August in Rome, Byzantium and Armenia alike, and 16 Mesori for the Copts.
