Eusebius, quoting Origen, says Asia fell to John when the apostles were scattered, and that he lived at Ephesus and governed the churches there into the reign of Trajan (HE 3.1, 3.23). Irenaeus, who had heard Polycarp, says the same and is only two lives away from the claim. Ephesus is where the Fourth Gospel and the letters were received, where Polycarp and Papias are placed within hearing of him, and where the tomb was shown for centuries — which is why the succession of Asia Minor matters as much to this dataset as the succession of Rome.

Ephesus becomes the second centre of the apostolic memory, and the seven churches of the Apocalypse are its province.
