In Domitian's reign, the tradition says, the aged John was banished to the quarry island of Patmos, where he was in the Spirit on the Lord's day and wrote what he saw to the seven churches of Asia. Under Nerva he returned to Ephesus — the one apostle the tradition lets die in his bed.
