Eusebius has him surviving to the time of Trajan, and the tomb at Ephesus was shown for centuries afterwards. Every other apostle in this dataset dies violently or is said to; John is the exception, and the exception is old and unanimous rather than an absence of evidence. His own gospel takes trouble over the saying that went round the brothers, that this disciple was not to die — 'yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, if it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?' The role here is reposed rather than victim for exactly that reason.
The only one of the Twelve the tradition does not make a martyr.
