Martyrdom of Mark

martyrdom · 68 · Alexandria

Eusebius gives the sober line: Mark, first bishop of Alexandria, was succeeded by Annianus in Nero's eighth year. The Alexandrian tradition adds the martyrdom — seized at the altar during his own liturgy and dragged through the streets with a rope. The see kept his lion for its arms.

Alexandria's founder dragged through its streets.
