At the Oak, a suburb of Chalcedon, Theophilus of Alexandria staged the synod that deposed John Chrysostom on charges that ranged from Origenism to lèse-majesté. The people's riots brought him back within days; a second banishment stuck, and the greatest preacher of the age died on the march to his place of exile.
The Synod of the Oak was a provincial synod, held in Constantinople in July of 403, which condemned and deposed John Chrysostom as Patriarch of Constantinople.
