After the breakfast of fish on the shore, Jesus asked Simon Peter three times whether he loved him, and three times gave him a charge: feed my lambs, tend my sheep, feed my sheep. The threefold asking answers the threefold denial in the high priest's courtyard, and Peter was grieved by the third. Then the word about the end — that he would stretch out his hands and be carried where he did not wish to go, which John glosses as the death by which he would glorify God. This is the passage from which every claim about the Petrine office is argued, in Rome and in the East, and it is the hinge on which a dataset of apostolic succession turns.
