gospel · -6 · Ein Karem
Carrying the promise, Mary went up into the hill country of Judah to her kinswoman Elizabeth, herself six months gone with John. The child leapt at the greeting, Elizabeth called her the mother of her Lord, and Mary answered with the song the church has sung at vespers ever since — 'my soul magnifies the Lord'. It is the one scene in which the two mothers of the gospel's opening stand together, and the only place the Magnificat is spoken.
Elizabeth names her the mother of her Lord; Mary answers with the Magnificat.
