Eusebius reports that before Titus closed on Jerusalem the church there, warned by an oracle, withdrew across the Jordan to Pella. Whatever the warning was, the community survived the siege that ended the city and the Temple. But it came back to a place that was no longer the centre of anything: after 70 the weight of the Christian world sits in Antioch, Alexandria and Rome, and the mother church of them all becomes a suffragan of Caesarea for two and a half centuries.
