Archbishop of Canterbury · 597 (Augustine's mission, sent by Gregory the Great)

Gregory the Great sent the monk Augustine to the Angles in 597; Æthelberht of Kent believed, and Canterbury became the mother see of the English. Theodore of Tarsus (668–690) — a Greek from Paul's own country — organized the whole English church under it, and its scholars (Bede, Alcuin) taught the West.

Continues today as the primatial see of the Church of England and the symbolic center of the Anglican Communion.
