Frumentius, shipwrecked as a boy at Aksum, converted the court of king Ezana and was consecrated first Abuna by Athanasius. For sixteen centuries the metropolitans of Ethiopia came from Alexandria; the ancient record is sparse, and this dataset keeps only the attested early bishops.
Continues today as the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (autocephalous since 1959), the largest of the Oriental Orthodox churches.
