The only two documents certainly by Patrick, and the earliest writing to survive from Ireland or Britain by a named author. The Confession is a defence written under attack by his own superiors, which is why it is so unusually personal: he calls himself a sinner and unlearned, and he says so often enough that it reads as a wound. It contains no dates, no place names of use, and nothing about snakes or shamrocks. Cited here, never quoted.
