The Coptic church's account of its own succession, one Life per patriarch from Mark onward - the only continuous narrative of the Alexandrian line, and the one that tells Chalcedon and the Arab conquest from the inside. Compiled in Arabic in the eleventh century from earlier Coptic and Greek lives, and traditionally ascribed to Severus of Al'Ashmunein; the compilation is now generally credited to Mawhub ibn Mansur of Alexandria, and the cited introduction sets out that case rather than the flat denial an earlier version of this row asserted. ⚠ ITS CHRONOLOGY IS ITS WEAKEST PART: it is a book of lives rather than a chronicle, and its dates are among the things editors correct rather than follow, so it is cited here as the witness to the SUCCESSION and not as the authority for the years. Evetts' English translation in Patrologia Orientalis covers patriarchs 1 to 52, ending with Joseph (d. 849), which is the exact range cited here.
