Archbishop of York · 627 (Paulinus baptizes Edwin at York)
Gregory's plan gave Britain two metropolitans; Paulinus reached York with queen Æthelburh and baptized king Edwin at Easter 627. The see fell with Edwin and was refounded from Iona's children and Theodore's order; from Ecgbert (735) it held the pallium, and Alcuin's school made it the lamp of the North.
Continues today as the Church of England's second see.
