Paul taught in the hall of Tyrannus, Timothy received the letters that ordered a church, and the Johannine tradition made Ephesus its city — host of the third ecumenical council and metropolitan of Asia. Under Constantinople's shadow it remained a great see until the medieval decline of the city itself.
Continues today as a metropolis of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, titular since the city emptied.
